I really enjoyed reading chapter two of Classrooms That Work. I already knew and had a high view of the
importance of reading and the comprehension of it. However, it was incredibly beneficial
to see time-tested features and characteristics of high functioning classrooms
over the past forty years or so. Ironically enough, the characteristics that
were listed for these classrooms matched up with my memories and thoughts of my
history as a reader. Chapter 1 focused on features that the teacher can control
in order to help students learn to read: maximized opportunities, integrating
reading into other subject areas, and asking high level questions of
reflection.

The main focus of the second chapter was the process of
creating enthusiastic independent readers. The authors really concentrated on
assessing and documenting student progress and even provided an example of a
form that students can fill out to share information. Additionally, the
practice of teacher read aloud time was highly recommended. I always enjoyed
the time during the day in which I was allowed to close my eyes and listen to
my teacher read. Just as the book stated, it was a motivating factor and
sparked interest in different types of books!

I also really liked the form that was in the book. It could also be fun to do the "snowball" activity that we did in class today. I like that it also encourages movement as well as a fun, new way to share thoughts.
